Employees don’t simply work for organizations. They form relationships with them. This belief is central to Dr. Cecil Johnson’s work exploring the often-overlooked emotional relationship between employees and the organizations they serve. Drawing parallels to personal relationships, he examines how expectations, unwritten promises, recognition, and trust shape employee commitment—and what happens when those expectations go unmet. His work, The Organization as a Romantic Partner, has informed his TEDx talk, podcast conversations, and thought leadership, challenging leaders to reconsider how organizations build, maintain, damage, and repair relationships with employees.
Cecil brings more than 30 years of corporate leadership experience across commercial operations, talent development, organizational culture, and global inclusion strategy. He currently serves as Global Head of Inclusive Business Strategy for Innovative Medicine at Johnson & Johnson. He holds a PhD in Global Leadership and Change from Pepperdine University and a master’s degree in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania, where he serves as Affiliated Faculty in the Organizational Dynamics program. His doctoral research examined inclusion, retention, and performance across U.S. and Japanese workforces. He also delivered the 2025 University of Pennsylvania College of Liberal and Professional Studies graduation keynote.
